July 21-23, 2003, Boat on the 24th : Nijipare' Hokkaido Field Trip

花 Snow covered mountains, just as we had imagined, reach down to flowers, flowers, flowers. The last clinging snow, still clinging, the Komakusa, the impressive purple of the Ezo cherry trees. The cute white forms of the Chinguruma, eagerly crowding towards the warmth, are all signs that summer is about to bloom in earnest while the tall mountain is short.
ロッジ With a cake we bought in secret from the Tops Shop in Haneda airport, we celebrated Ukiko-chan's 13th birthday at the Nutaukaushibe-Lodge. After a delicious meal, we all sang "happy birthday" at the top of our lungs and had a really fun evening.
ラベンダー We made the rounds of art galleries and photo studios through the midst of fields of enough lavender to last us the rest of our lives. Cries of "I've had enough of lavender! Let's make ice cream", float throught the air.
支笏湖 Drysuits and gloves protected us from the cool waters of Shikotsu lake while we enjoyed snorkelling in it. The motor boat took us to a place where the sun was glittering off the water, and there were fish swimming all over the place. The children found shrimp, crabs, and rare fish, and the hour went by in a flash. An ancient tree, preserved by the clear, cool, waters lay on the lake floor, mysterious.

P.S.
This time we split into two groups for the return trip, some of us going by plane, and the rest by boat. On the last day we went to a hot spring in an Ainu village. After observing some of the Ainu lifestyle and traditional dance we had a go at the Mukkuri, an instrument made of bamboo. One of our students made a Mukkuri that sounded even better than the ones for sale and spent the boat trip home enveloped in serious practice.
